The 2024 Tesla Model Y will represent the fifth production year of this compact electric crossover and from what we can hear, some novelties may come after all. No, we won’t see a facelift or something like that. Instead, it looks like we could see the base Standard Range version back. Allegedly, Tesla management is seriously considering bringing back the more affordable variant of the crossover, which offers a slightly shorter range but would come at a pretty competitive price, which is important if we consider that the segment is getting pretty crowded.
Other than the possibility to see the base version again, we expect that the 2024 Tesla Model Y will continue in the same way. It will continue to deliver good performance, good range and pretty engaging handling. The list of standard equipment is pretty long, while there is a third row of seats as well. On the other hand, things like poor interior quality and firm ride will remain the key drawbacks.
2024 Tesla Model Y Design
As we’ve just mentioned, the base design won’t change. Despite the possibility of the base version’s comeback, things will remain largely the same overall. Therefore, you may count on a design that takes a lot from the Model 3, both in mechanics and aesthetics. In terms of styling, the two models look pretty similar, with the same design language and overall proportions. Other than the higher ground clearance, things aren’t all that different at all. The Model Y represents a toned-down, more common counterpart of the Model X and it is designed to compete with more affordable electric SUVs on the market, such as Audi e-tron, Cadillac Lyriq, Mercedes EQB etc.
The same thing is with the chassis and suspension setup. Due to the slightly higher center of gravity, the level of athleticism is slightly lower compared to the Model 3, but still superior compared to most electric SUVs. The steering is precise, while the body roll is minimal.
Interior
On the inside, you can see a typical Tesla design philosophy. The dashboard looks super simple and you will find nothing but a massive touchscreen, which replaces all physical controls. The materials are OK, though they could have been better. What’s a much bigger issue is that the build quality isn’t impressive, especially when it comes to attention t detail. In this aspect, the Model Y is nowhere near similarly priced rivals.
On the other hand, the cabin is spacious and comfortable. Base models come with two rows of seats, which are comfortable and supportive. You can also opt for the third row, which isn’t particularly functional and works for kids only. The cargo area is quite decent for the segment, as the total volume goes up to 76 cubic feet. Moreover, there is also decent storage space in the trunk.
Features
Just like the previous model years, the 2024 Tesla Model Y is expected to come fully loaded with features. For reference, the current model comes standard with goodies like a 15-inch touch screen, navigation, a Wi-Fi hotspot, HD Radio, a 14-speaker stereo, Bluetooth, four USB ports, wireless device charging, automatic climate control, keyless entry, and a panoramic sunroof.
When it comes to safety features, all models should come standard with goodies like forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rearview camera, parking sensors, road-sign recognition, automatic high beams, Tesla Autopilot etc.
2024 Tesla Model Y Drivetrain, Battery and Range
As we already mentioned, some sources suggest that Tesla could bring back the base version. That model, known as Standard Range, would come with a battery that ensures around 250 miles on a single charge. For those who look for better autonomy, the Long Range version will remain on offer for sure. That model provides up to 330 miles of range, while the electric motors are strong enough to provide 0-60 sprint in about 4.8 seconds.
Finally, there is the Performance model, which comes with even more power and needs just 3.5 seconds to hit 60. However, due to the more powerful electric motors, it is also slightly less efficient, so the max range goes up to 303 miles.
2024 Tesla Model Y Release Date and Price
We expect to see the 2024 Tesla Model Y sometime in the second half of the next year. The current model starts at around 60.000 dollars but if the Standard Range version comes back, it will probably go down a little bit.
For $34,000 less I could buy a Toyota Corolla hybrid, and use that money for fuel. It gets about the same distance mileage as their higher performance Tesla, but it only takes me about seven minutes to get gas. Will take you hours to charge your battery. No thanks I’ll take the savings and my Corolla will be worth its value in 10 years while your tesla in 10 to 15 years would be like buying an old iPhone. Not gonna happen!
Amen.
