Despite the resistance of conservative enthusiasts, we are pretty deep in the process of electrification of the automotive industry, so much so that even one of the most rugged and most iconic off-roaders is turning to electricity. Yes, we are talking about the 2024 Mercedes-Benz EQG, which will replace the coming G-Wagon. The new generation is in development and it will hit the market pretty soon.
Mercedes-Benz has been teasing the EQG for some time now, with rumors and spy shots emerging from various sources. The latest reports indicate that the all-electric version of the G-Class SUV will debut in 2024, providing luxury car buyers with an environmentally-friendly option that retains the rugged off-road capabilities of the G-Class.
2024 Mercedes-Benz EQG Design
The EQG retains the iconic boxy silhouette of the G-Class, but with a few updates that highlight its electric powertrain. The EQG’s closed-off grille with a large Mercedes star in the center, flanked by LED headlights and the prominent Mercedes-Benz logo on the front and the rear, give it a modern and futuristic touch. The side profile of the EQG features flared fenders, prominent side steps, and large wheels that convey its off-road prowess. A unique feature of the EQG is a light bar that runs across the roof, providing a distinctive visual element while also enhancing visibility at night.
As for the mechanics, the company is assuring us that the all-electric EQG won’t lose any of its traditional qualities. It will remain one of the most capable off-roaders around, and the all-electric iteration will also ride on a body-on-frame platform and feature a similar suspension setup to the outgoing gasoline model. This would mean an independent front suspension, in a combination with a rigid axle on the rear end.
2024 Mercedes-Benz EQG Powertrain and Battery
From what we know so far, there will be at least two variants regarding the drivetrain. The company already announced a quad-motor version, which would come with one electric motor on each wheel. That setup will be reserved for the range-topping model, while the base versions should come with just two motors, one on each axle. Some sources suggest that base versions would feature a max output of around 400 horsepower, though we are still waiting for the official confirmation. Also, the Car and Driver suggest a two-speed transmission, with a ratio that would optimize this SUV for off-roading.
As for the battery, we can hear rumors about the 2024 Mercedes-Benz EQG featuring exactly the same pack as the EQS. That would mean a pack with a capacity of 108 kWh, which would ensure more than decent autonomy. Sources speculate about 300 miles of range and if we consider the expected curb weight, the new G-Wagon will probably need a bigger battery to achieve this autonomy. As for the charging speed, we count on the same 350-kW technology.
Interior
The interior of the EQG is expected to be similar to that of the current G-Class, with a luxurious and comfortable cabin. The EQG’s infotainment system is expected to feature a large screen that provides access to a range of features such as navigation, entertainment, and climate control. The interior is expected to feature high-quality materials such as leather and wood, adding to the overall luxurious feel of the vehicle.
It’s still early to talk more precisely but we are glad that most reports suggest a design approach that doesn’t necessarily follow the latest trends of the automotive industry, where electric vehicles are usually characterized by a futuristic design approach, with lots of minimalistic design solutions. Fortunately, that won’t be the case with the new 2024 Mercedes-Benz EQG.
2024 Mercedes-Benz EQG Release Date and Price
We believe that the production of the 2024 Mercedes-Benz EQG could start already in the next year. As for the price, we presume that the new model will cost notably more than the gas-powered version, which currently starts at around 140.000 dollars.
