These days, everyone talks about Mazda’s brand-new CX-90 flagship SUV, which is about to hit the market this spring. It will bring a lot of novelties, including a new inline-six engine, and become the most luxurious SUV Mazda has ever made. Of course, it will come as a replacement for the current CX-9 but if we can trust the latest reports, the current mid-size SUV will remain in production for some more time, including the next year. Therefore, the 2024 Mazda CX-9 should carry on without more important changes.
We are about to see a familiar design, which will be sold alongside the new CX-90. The CX-9 will continue to offer a nicely-designed interior, an engaging ride and a potent turbo-four engine. We also like its long list of standard and available features, whether it’s about tech, convenience or driver-assistance goodies.
As there are no significant changes to come, we presume that the 2024 Mazda CX-9 will hit the market sometime in the last quarter of the year.
2024 Mazda CX-9 Design
If we can trust the latest reports, the Japanese manufacturer will do the same thing it did with the CX-5 and CX-50 models. This means that, although the brand-new CX-90 will debut pretty soon, the CX-9 will remain in production for some more time. The 2024 Mazda CX-9 will bring a familiar design, without more important changes, whether it’s about mechanics or aesthetics.
All in all, you may count on a crossover that still looks pretty stylish, thanks to the well-aging KODO design language. The CX-9 offers a surprisingly high level of athleticism for a mid-size crossover, with engaging handling and minimal body lean in corners. Since this is going to be one of the final production years, we don’t believe that the Japanese manufacturer could offer more important updates.
Interior
Of course, the 2024 Mazda CX-9 interior will also carry on in the same way, with a familiar layout. The CX-9 has always been praised for its premium cabin look and, even today, everything looks pretty fresh and elegant. We like the simplistic dashboard design, as well as a pretty fine selection of high-quality materials.
Besides elegance, the CX-9 also offers a decent level of functionality. It is a three-row crossover, which offers great comfort for the passengers in the first two rows. On the other hand, the third row isn’t that generous with space and actually offers less room than rivals like Toyota Highlander or Kia Telluride. The same could be said for the cargo area, which offers around 14.4 cubic feet of room behind the third row, 38.2 cubic feet behind the second row and a total cargo volume of 71.2 cubic feet of space.
Features
Although yearly updates usually bring some novelties in this aspect, we don’t believe that the 2024 Mazda CX-9 could come with any notable addition. Instead, most things should remain the same as in the current model. This would mean base models equipped with goodies like a 10.25-inch display, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, a six-speaker stereo, four USB ports, HD Radio, Bluetooth, a Wi-Fi hot spot, voice recognition, wireless device charging, tri-zone automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a universal garage door opener and a moonroof. Among upgrades, expect to find goodies like a 7-inch digital instrument cluster display, satellite radio, two third-row USB ports, navigation, ambient interior lighting etc.
When it comes to safety features, base models should come standard with goodies like forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high beams, rearview camera, rain-sensing windshield wipers etc. Among upgrades, expect to find goodies like a head-up display, traffic-sign recognition, surround-view camera, adaptive headlights, and driver-attention monitoring.
2024 Mazda CX-9 Engines
Under the hood, the 2024 Mazda CX-9 will continue with a good-old 2.5-liter turbo-four. The max output depends on the type of fuel you use. If you pour regular gasoline, the max output goes around 227 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, while the premium fuel increases the max output to 250 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque. The engine comes in pair with a 6-speed automatic transmission, which shifts quickly and feels pretty refined.
The CX-9 offers good driving dynamics, along with good fuel economy. You may count on about 20 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway, which is pretty good if we consider that all-wheel drive is part of the standard equipment. On the other hand, the max towing capacity isn’t all that good, considering that it is rated at 3.500 pounds.
2024 Mazda CX-9 Release Date and Price
The 2024 Mazda CX-9 won’t feature bigger changes, so we don’t expect to see it before the last quarter of the year. When it comes to the price, we expect that base models will cost slightly under 40.000 dollars.
