Electric cars are the future of the automotive industry and if we consider that a vast majority of carmakers have such vehicles in development, we could say that the future is here. Almost every company is working on electrification and while some of them have been in this for several years, others are just entering the game.
Of course, most of the new electric cars come in the form of SUVs and crossovers. Simply, this is the most popular segment of the industry, so the upcoming electric cars won’t offer just things like impressive range and power, but traditional SUV values as well, such as practicality, interior room and even off-road performance.
The number of upcoming electric SUVs for the next year is pretty big, so we made a selection of the most interesting models for you. As you will see, the list includes most models from the world’s most renowned companies, companies that have been masters in making cars with internal-combustion engines. Now, they are bringing up completely new technologies, particularly in terms of efficiency, charging capabilities, and similar things.
Another interesting thing about this list is that, while most models are still pretty expensive, there are also several manufacturers that will try to make their new EV models as affordable as possible. For example, the upcoming Chevy Equinox EV is expected to cost around 30.000 dollars, which sounds super-attractive when compared to most other electric cars.
Of course, the list also includes some exclusive, very expensive models, such as the Mercedes-Benz EQS, Porsche Macan EV and Lexus RZ.
2023 BMW iX1
The Bavarian carmaker plans to have 13 all-electric models in its lineup by the end of 2023. Of course, that list won’t just include super-expensive, high-performance models, but entry-level cars as well. In the segment of crossovers, that place will belong to the new 2023 BMW iX1.
The new subcompact all-electric SUV has just been presented and from what we can see, it shares a lot with the X1 model, which comes completely redesigned for the 2023 year. Moreover, the styling looks so similar that the company needed to add a lot of blue accents to make the all-electric model look more exclusive.
Of course, the most interesting aspect of this model will be the powertrain. The company presented just one version so far, with a dual-motor setup and a max output of 308 horsepower. According to the manufacturer, that model will need 5.7 seconds to hit 60 mph. We believe that single-motor versions will be offered too.
When it comes to the battery, we know that the 2023 BMW iX1 will use a 64.7-kW battery pack, which will ensure 272 miles per charge, according to WLTP. Of course, the company will offer various charging options, including the fast charger, which will be able to charge the battery from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes. Allegedly, this charger will be able to add 75 miles of range every 10 minutes.
We expect to see the 2023 BMW iX1 available by the end of this year.
2023 Mercedes Benz EQE SUV
As you probably know, the German company has just introduced the new EQS model, which comes both in sedan and SUV form. So, we expect the same thing with the EQE models. These models will compete in the mid-size segment and while the sedan version has already arrived, the SUV is still to come.
Of course, we expect that the new SUV will share most of the mechanics, including the powertrain. We could only see minor modifications in terms of power and torque. The EQE sedan comes with a few powertrain options on the offer, starting from a single-motor setup that offers 288 horsepower.
Naturally, we presume that most drivers will rather search for something more capable. A dual-motor setup should feature a max output of 402 horsepower, which should be enough for some pretty respectable performances.
The battery should feature around 90-kWh in capacity, which should provide around 300 miles of the all-electric range. With a fast charger, we expect something like 10 to 80 percent in about 30 minutes.
The new 2023 Mercedes Benz EQE SUV should arrive by the end of this year, with a starting price of around 80.000 dollars.
2023 Subaru Soltera
Subaru has just introduced its first all-electric vehicle. The all-new SUV comes as the 2023 Subaru Soltera and it’s already available in some markets. It is designed to provide great performance at a reasonable price, so it’s no wonder that the car was developed along with Toyota.
The new Soltera shares most of its parts with the Toyota bZ4X, particularly in terms of the platform, chassis, and drivetrain. Speaking of the drivetrain, the new crossover features a dual-motor setup, with a total output of 215 horsepower and 249 pound-feet of torque.
Along with the electric motors, you may count on a 72.8-kWh battery pack, which will ensure up to 228 miles of range, according to the manufacturer. Of course, there are various charging options, including a fast charger, which is able to charge 80% of the battery in less than an hour.
The Japanese company promises not just good on-road performance, but strong off-road capabilities as well. The vehicle features 8.3 inches of ground clearance, while you may also count on four drive modes – Eco, Normal, Power, and X-mode. As you may presume, the X-mode is reserved for off-roading, snow, and slippery surfaces in general.
The 2023 Subaru Soltera starts at around 46.000 dollars.
2023 Mazda MX-30
Mazda’s small crossover has been around for a while and it established itself as a nice city car, with amazing styling and lots of interesting design solutions. However, most experts agree that 100 miles of the all-electric range aren’t enough, even for a small city car like this. Currently, the model comes with a 35.5 kWh battery.
Therefore, we expect that the 2023 Mazda MX-30 will come with a slightly bigger battery, as well as a more powerful electric motor compared to the current one, which puts out 141 horsepower. Also, we might see some improvement regarding charging capabilities, considering that the current fast charger is good for just 40 kW, which is low by today’s standards.
Furthermore, the company is also preparing a version with a range extender, which would come with a rotary gasoline engine. This will be a kind of a plug-in hybrid powertrain, as the two units will operate in series.
Currently, California is the only U.S. state where you can buy this crossover. However, we expect that the 2023 Mazda MX-30 will be offered across North America, both as a PHEV and EV model.
2023 Lexus RZ
Lexus is also preparing its first all-electric vehicle and that model will be called the RZ. According to the latest reports, the model is almost ready and it will hit the market in the second half of the year.
As you may presume, the 2023 Lexus RZ will ride on the same platform as Toyota bZ4X and Subaru Solterra. However, this model will be superior in many aspects, starting from the drivetrain. It will come with more powerful electric motors and that dual-motor setup will be good for about 308 horsepower.
On the other hand, the battery capacity will also feature 65.6 kWh in capacity, which should provide around 225 miles of the all-electric range. One of the weakest points of this SUV will be a modest 6.6-kW onboard charger, while the fast charger will feature a pretty decent power of 150 kW.
Other than the drivetrain and battery, we count on typical Lexus features. The cabin looks very upscale and we have no doubt that the Japanese manufacturer will offer excellent build quality. The cabin also looks pretty spacious for a compact crossover.
Due to luxury features, the 2023 Lexus RZ won’t be cheap at all. The latest reports suggest a starting price of around 55.000 dollars.
2023 Porsche Macan EV
This all-electric version of the popular crossover has been in development for several years and it looks like the serial production is getting close. From what we know so far, the 2023 Porsche Macan EV will offer some pretty interesting things.
This particularly refers to the battery technology. It looks like the Macan EV will ride on the same architecture as the new Taycan. This means that you may count on a mighty 800-v architecture, which should provide an impressive 270 kW of charging power.
At this point, the company keeps numbers a secret. The only thing we know is that the max range should go around 227 miles. On the other hand, things like the battery capacity, max output, and performance are still a mystery.
What’s not a mystery is the styling. The test mule has been spotted and even though it still wears camouflage, we can see that the overall shape won’t be much different compared to the classic, gasoline- and diesel-powered Macan. The main difference will be at the front, where we expect to see Taycan-inspired headlights and other design solutions.
Some reports suggest a starting price of around 80.000 dollars.
2023 Kia Niro EV
The Kia Niro is a well-familiar name in the world of all-electric cars but the 2023 model comes completely redesigned, with improvements in various aspects. Just like the first generation, the new model also comes in various powertrain configurations, including hybrid and all-electric options.
Of course, the all-electric version is the subject of this brief article and from what we can see, there will be just one configuration regarding the powertrain. All versions will come with a single electric motor that puts out 201 horsepower, which is the same power as in the previous version.
However, the battery is completely new and now features a 64.8-kWh battery pack, which should ensure 240 miles of range. Also, there is a new DC fast charger, able to charge 80% of the battery in about 45 minutes.
Besides the new technologies, the redesigned 2023 Kia Niro EV also brings a completely new, way more attractive styling, which should boost sales a lot. The cabin also looks more upscale, while bigger dimensions should provide more interior space.
We expect to see the new 2023 Kia Niro EV on sale later this year, with a starting price of around 42.000 dollars.
2023 Cadillac Lyriq
Cadillac also comes with its first all-electric SUV, called Lyriq. The new model has been in development for a while and the new model is already available for pre-order. We expect that the first deliveries will start by the end of the year.
The first thing you’ll notice about this SUV is its pretty attractive styling, which combines coupe SUV elements with a pretty futuristic front-end design. The same thing is with the interior design, which takes some inspiration from the flagship Escalade but also brings more futuristic details to the game.
Still, the most interesting part of the 2023 Cadillac Lyriq is its drivetrain. We know that the new model will be offered in two variants. Base models will come with a single electric motor, mounted on the rear axle, with a max output of 340 horsepower. A dual-motor version will also come, with a max output of 500 horsepower.
When it comes to the battery, we will see GM’s latest Ultium technology. In this case, we expect to see a 100-kWh pack, which should ensure around 310 miles of the all-electric range. Details about fast-charging performance are still unavailable.
The starting price will go around 60.000 dollars, while the dual version is expected to cost $5.000 extra.
2023 Chevrolet Equinox EV
The new generation of Chevy’s popular crossover will arrive in the next year. However, this will be more than just a regular redesign, as Equinox will completely change its character. The new model will be offered only with an all-electric powertrain and what’s particularly interesting is that the company is promising a very attractive price.
At this point, we don’t know much about the drivetrain and the battery. The company keeps details a secret but there’s no doubt that the new model will use GM’s new Ultium battery technology which besides respectable capacity, also offers pretty advanced charging options.
On the other hand, Chevy teased us two times so far. The first time we saw the exterior design that shows Chevy’s new styling approach. While the overall share isn’t significantly different compared to the current model, the front features a pretty futuristic layout, characterized by super-narrow headlights, a massive grille, and large air intakes.
The second teaser was about the cabin design, which shows a futuristic dashboard design, highlighted by a massive infotainment screen. However, it is still hard to talk about things like materials and interior quality, especially if we consider that the company tends to keep the price very low.
According to the latest reports, the base Equinox EV should be available already at 30.000 dollars.
2023 Honda Prologue
The company known for spectacular gasoline engines, and excellent mechanics in general, is also entering the EV segment. However, Honda is a little bit late in the game, so the Japanese giant is forced to cooperate with General Motors. More precisely, it will borrow battery technology, along with other components.
At this point, it is still unclear whether the 2023 Honda Prologue is about to use Honda’s electric motors or GM’s. On the other hand, the battery will certainly come from GM. We will see the new Ultium battery technology, though it’s still early to talk about numbers for this application. Some rumors suggest a 100-kWh battery pack, which would ensure around 300 miles on a single charge.
On the other hand, we know that this will be a compact crossover. It will be similarly sized to Honda CR-V, with similar interior space as well. Although we saw a couple of render photos, it is still early to talk about the styling, interior design, etc.
We expect that the 2023 Honda Prologue will hit the market sometime in the next year. Details about the price are still unknown, but we estimate that base versions could go around 45.000 dollars.
2023 Nissan Ariya
Nissan is one of the true pioneers of the EV segment. The LEAF was the first mass-production all-electric car in the world and it’s been sold in more than 600.000 examples so far. However, the company wants to bring up the game and offers something that’s not just practical, but also very desirable.
That’s why the Japanese engineers prepared a model called the 2023 Nissan Ariya. This is an attractive crossover that, besides gorgeous aesthetics, also has some pretty advanced technology to offer.
From what we know so far, Nissan will offer a couple of choices, both in terms of power and battery. Base models will come with a single electric motor setup, with a max output of 214 or 238 horsepower. On the other hand, the dual-motor version will feature a max output of 389 horsepower.
When it comes to battery, base versions will feature a 63-kWh pack, which should ensure up to 250 miles of range. On the other hand, versions with a bigger, 87-kWh battery should ensure around 300 miles of range. In both cases, you may count on a fast charger that goes up to 130 kW.
We expect to see the 2023 Nissan Ariya this fall, with a starting price of around 40.000 dollars.
2023 Mercedes Benz EQS
After the launch of the EQS sedan, it’s time for the SUV iteration. This crossover will ride on the same platform and feature the same wheelbase. On the other hand, it will come with three rows of seats as standard. The cabin will also come with the monstrous 57-inch hyperscreen, which covers pretty much the entire dashboard.
When it comes to the electric motors and drivetrain, we will see two versions of the SUV. Base models will come with a single electric motor, which puts out around 335 horsepower. On the other hand, all-wheel-drive models will come with an additional electric motor at the front, with a total output of 536 horsepower.
When it comes to the battery, all versions will come with a 107.8-kWh battery pack, which should ensure around 350 miles of range. You may also count on a pretty impressive 200-kW fast charger, which will be able to charge 80% of the battery in about 30 minutes.
We expect that the 2023 Mercedes Benz EQS will arrive by the end of this year. The latest reports suggest a starting price of around 114.000 dollars, while the dual-motor version should start at around $130.000.
