The current generation of Volvo’s compact crossover has been around for about three years and if we can rely on rumors, the 2022 Volvo XC60 could get a facelift. The upcoming 2021 model year is coming with a lot of new features, but significant changes are yet to come. We presume that visual changes would be in the focus of this update, though novelties in other aspects could come as well.
However, we don’t expect a full redesign but rather just a facelift. the current generation will remain in production for several more years, so you may count on familiar design characteristics, which are mostly about style and comfort. The XC60 is one of the most comfortable and most stylish models in the class, so things could become even better after this update. When it comes to the powertrain, the 2022 Volvo XC60 probably won’t go all-electric, despite the rumors.
2022 Volvo XC60 Facelift
As we’ve just mentioned, most rumors suggest a mid-cycle refresh for the 2022 Volvo XC60. This would be a typical facelift, mostly about visual changes. Naturally, we expect that most of the changes will come at the front, where we might see revisions in areas like headlights, grille, bumper etc. On the other side, the rear end probably won’t come with so significant changes and most of the things would remain the same. Of course, the overall shape would also remain the same, while we count on typical updates in terms of new color options, wheels and similar things.
On the other side, the mechanics are about to remain the same. This model rides on the company’s familiar SPA platform, which is modular and underprints pretty much the entire lineup. In this case, the chassis setup is mostly about comfort. On the other side, handling and overall performances aren’t particularly sporty.
Interior
While this update could bring a lot of novelties to the exterior design, the interior would probably remain untouched. Simply, the current model already features one of the nicest cabins in the segment. It features excellent build quality, along with super-fine materials and attractive aesthetics. Therefore, the best we could see for the next year are novelties in terms of tech features and some new color schemes.
On the other side, the overall cabin layout is about to remain the same. This means plenty of space in both rows, which is no wonder considering more than 112 inches in wheelbase. The cargo area is as generous. It offers around 22.4 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats and 63.3 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.
2022 Volvo XC60 Engines
While the smaller XC40 has recently arrived in a new, all-electric variant, we don’t expect this will happen to the 2022 Volvo XC60. Most likely, the all-electric version will come after the redesign. Until then, things will remain the same, so you may count on three familiar powertrain options. Base models will carry on with a 2.0-liter turbo-four that puts out around 250 horsepower. The same engine is available in a version with both turbo and supercharger and the max output goes up to 316 horsepower.
Finally, there is a plug-in hybrid version, which uses both supercharge and turbocharger, along with the electric motor. So, the overall output goes up to 400 horsepower. All three models use a well-known 8-speed Aisin automatic transmission, which does the job really well in this case. When it comes to fuel economy, the base engine returns around 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway.

We expect to see the 2022 Volvo XC60 sometime in the second half of next year, with the starting price around 42.000 dollars. Some of the key competitors are models like Audi Q5, BMW X3 etc.
