Once a capable off-roader designed primarily for military purposes, the legendary G-Wagen is one of the most luxurious SUVs on the market, vastly popular among celebrities and other rich men. At the same time, it is one of the biggest gas guzzlers around, with terrible fuel economy. Fortunately or not, this is going to change soon, as the German manufacturer is working on a new, all-electric version. While we are still don’t know the details, we presume it will come in about two years, most likely as the 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQG.
The new electric version has been officially confirmed but the company still hides most details as secret. Therefore, it’s hard to tell if it is about to come as a completely new model, or it will be based on the current version. In any case, all this sounds really exciting and we are eagerly waiting to hear new details.
2022 Mercedes-Benz EQG Details
The current generation has been around for just a couple of years. It came decades after the launch of the original model and despite the familiar look, it is pretty much a completely new vehicle, which came with significant improvements in pretty much all aspects. However, that doesn’t mean the new 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQG would ride on the same platform. Many experts think differently.
Simply, the German manufacturer has recently established a new sub-brand simply called EQ. This clearly indicates that we are talking about electric vehicles. We’ve already seen vehicles like EQS and EQC, so we are pretty sure that the electric version will stick to the same naming policy and come as the 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQG.
Still, it looks like we will have to wait a couple of more years to see the all-electric G-Wagen. Most likely, this model will come sometime in 2022. However, it looks like we will see some form of electrification earlier, most likely a PHEV version, though we are still waiting for the official details.
2022 Mercedes-Benz EQG: Meanwhile
The electrification of the legendary luxury off-roader is certainly coming. Still, it looks like we will have to wait a couple of more years. A hybrid version should come as well. Meanwhile, the famous SUV will carry on in the current form, with familiar internal-combustion engines in the offer. Of course, we are talking about the well-known 4.0-liter V8, which comes in two output variants. Base models are good for about 416 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque, while the hi-end, AMG version comes with a significant power boost. In this case, a max output goes around 577 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque. Such an amount is enough to move this SUV from zero to 60 in just 4.5 seconds.
As we already mentioned, this is one of the thirstiest SUVs in the market. The base version returns just 13 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the highway. The AMG model is even worse and returns just 13 mpg in the city and 15 mpg on the highway. Still, a good thing to know is that this model features above-average reliability ratings.
Features
As we are talking about one of the most luxurious SUVs around, it’s no wonder that the amount of standard and available features is really impressive. The 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQG shouldn’t be any different, as the current model is already impressive in this aspect. Base models come with things like 12.3-inch display, a touchpad controller, navigation, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, satellite radio, two USB ports, 15-speaker Burmester surround-sound stereo, three household-style power outlets, a sunroof, tri-zone automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry, and push-button start. Additionally, you can get goodies like Wi-Fi hot spot, remote start, and a rear-seat entertainment system with two 10-inch screens and a 12.3-inch digital instrument display.
When it comes to safety features, base models come fully loaded and you can hardly get anything that’s not on the list of standard equipment. Some of the highlights are things like rain-sensing windshield wipers, automatic high-beam headlights, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, parallel and perpendicular park assist, adaptive cruise control, a rearview camera, traffic sign recognition, a driver attention monitor, and Mercedes’ Pre-Safe pre-collision passenger protection system.
2022 Mercedes-Benz EQG Release Date and Price
As we already mentioned, we expect to see 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQG sometime in about to years. On the other side, it’s still early to talk about the price tag. The current gasoline model starts around 131.000 dollars.
