Although we are living in the world of crossovers, there is still a decent number of buyers that would rather have a genuine SUV. After all, we are witnessing the rise in popularity of models like Toyota 4Runner and Jeep Wrangler, while the legendary Ford Bronco has also returned. Of course, GM wants its piece of the cake, so we might see another big comeback in the near future. The new model should come as the 2022 GMC Jimmy, with a badge that is very well known among SUV enthusiasts.
The Jimmy was in production for about two decades, mostly during the 80s and 90s. It has always had a lot in common with Chevy Blazer but that won’t be the case with the new model. While Chevy’s model has gone in another direction, the 2022 GMC Jimmy will come as a genuine BoF SUV, which will combine toughness, off-road ability and utility. We believe it could arrive already in the next year.
2022 GMC Jimmy Redesign
The first and most important thing to say about the 2022 GMC Jimmy is that it will be a genuine BoF SUV. Unlike the Blazer, which became a unibody crossover, this one will stick with its tradition. It will ride on a body-on-frame platform. Most likely, the platform will be borrowed from GMC Canyon and Chevy Colorado pickups. We count on the same mechanics, though we might see a couple of tweaks in terms of suspension setup. In other words, this model may feature a little bit more refined rear suspension, which would provide a better driving experience.
As we are talking about a BoF SUV, we expect that there will be a lot of upgrades in the offer, in terms of the off-road hardware. We are talking about things like 4WD, locking differentials, two-speed transfer case, skid plates, all-terrain tires etc. Still, we presume that most of these features will remain exclusive for the AT4 model.
Exterior
When it comes to the exterior design, the first thing we should talk about is the size. We presume that the 2022 GMC Jimmy will feature typical dimensions for the mid-size segment. That would mean around 115 inches in wheelbase, roughly. That’s not too much to compromise off-road potential, especially if we consider the expected high ground clearance.
When it comes to styling, we count on a lot of influence from GMC’s latest pickup trucks. This particularly refers to the front end, which should look pretty similar to the new Sierra. We count on the same design approach, which includes a bold design, with lots of rectangular shapes. The rest of the body should come in a typical wagon manner.
Interior
As we already mentioned one of the GM’s goals is to take a number of 4Runner buyers. That’s why we expect that the 2022 GMC Jimmy will come with three rows of seats. We count on a decent amount of space in the first two rows. On the other side, the third row will probably be tight, which is a common thing for most mid-sized SUVs and crossovers.
When it comes to the dashboard design, things are still mysterious. We definitely expect to see something more stylish and upscale compared to the Canyon, but we still can’t predict the details. We presume a lot of inspiration could be taken from the Yukon. The dashboard could be similar, just like the use of materials. Naturally, we also count on a lot of tech goodies in the offer, including a decently sized infotainment screen, wireless smartphone integration and a plethora of driver assistance features.
2022 GMC Jimmy Engines
When it comes to powertrain, we expect that base versions will come with a well-known 3.6-liter V6, which puts out around 310 horsepower. However, that probably won’t be the only engine on the offer. We presume that a new 2.7-liter turbo-four could be offered as well. This engine has similar max output as the V6 but offers much more torque, which would make a significant difference off the road.
Also, there is always a chance to see a diesel version. If this model happens, we presume it would come with a 3.0-liter V6, which puts out 277 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. Some sources even speculate about hi-performance versions, which would use a V8 engine.
2022 GMC Jimmy Release Date and Price
This SUV is still just a rumor, while the officials are still quiet. Therefore, take its arrival with a big reserve. If it happens, we presume that base versions could cost somewhere between 35.000 and 40.000 dollars.
