The legendary Hummer is coming back, but in a completely different form than before. Unlike the previous generations, which were extremely thirsty, the new model will be completely the opposite. It will come as an all-electric vehicle. Another big change is that the new model will come under GMC’s badge, as the 2022 GMC Hummer EV.
The first versions are expected to arrive this fall. From what we know so far, the new Hummer will come as a pickup truck first, while the SUV version is also expected in the future. The new model will be extremely capable, whether it’s about acceleration, autonomy or towing capacity. The most expensive, “Edition 1” model will come first and won’t be cheap at all.
2022 GMC Hummer EV Powertrain
This is probably the most interesting aspect of the new 2022 GMC Hummer EV. From what we can read and hear, this pickup truck will be extremely capable. The new model will feature three electric motors, with a total output of around 1.000 horsepower. We can also hear from GM management talks about 11.000 pound-feet of torque, but experts suggest that the real-life number will probably go around 1.100 pounds.
Such numbers will certainly provide excellent performances. The latest reports suggest 0-60 time in about three seconds, while the max towing capacity should go up to 11.000 pounds.
Battery and Charging
The new 2022 GMC Hummer EV will be built on a new platform that has an 800-volt capacity. It will be able to charge with a fast 350-kW charger, which means that you’ll be able to add 100 miles of range in just 10 minutes. Of course, you’ll be able to charge the battery on regular public charging terminals or at home. However, the exact numbers about the battery are still unknown. Some sources suggest a max range of around 350 miles.
2022 GMC Hummer EV Redesign
When it comes to base design characteristics, we already mentioned that the 2022 GMC Hummer EV will ride on a completely new EV platform. The same architecture will be used for the all-electric Silverado. The new model will come as a pickup truck first, with 135.6 inches in wheelbase. For comparison, that’s similar to the Regular Cab Silverado.
What we like about the new model is the styling. It closely resembles the previous generations of the legendary nameplate, but also comes with a lot of modern details. Such a mix of new and retro makes this truck look very desirable. We expect that all models will come with removable door panels and a roof.
Interior
On the inside, you may also count on a nice mix of modern and retroelements. Of course, modern elements are mainly about the latest tech goodies. The Hummer EV will come standard with a large digital instrument cluster and infotainment screen, as well as with tons of other tech goodies. The instrument cluster will measure 12.3 inches diagonally, while the infotainment screen will be good for about 13.4 inches. Interestingly, GM appointed Epic Games (Fortnite) to create graphics for the new infotainment system.
Also, many design elements will resemble the original Hummer. Finally, GM will also accentuate its tradition in space programs and cooperation with NASA. Therefore, you may count on a number of small touches, such as a moon-boot footprint on the dead pedal and speakers that show the “Sea of Tranquility”.
The 2022 GMC Hummer will come in a crew cab layout, with two rows of space. We count on a similar amount of passenger space as in the Crew Cab Silverado, which means enough room for adults in both rows.
2022 GMC Hummer Release Date and Price
The initial version of the 2022 GMC Hummer will arrive this fall, under the “Edition 1” name, which will feature a pretty high starting price of around 112.000 dollars. Cheaper versions are expected in 2022 and the most affordable models will probably cost around $80.000. Some of the key competitors should be models like Tesla Cybertruck, Rivian R1T, Bollinger B2 etc.
