The new generation of the world’s most legendary pickup truck has just arrived and we don’t expect to see bigger changes for the second production year, especially in terms of the 2022 Ford F-150 Diesel, which takes a special place in the lineup. Compared to the previous generation, the new model came with a number of nice improvements, both in terms of comfort and performance. All the changes were rather evolutionary and we have no doubt that things are about to remain the same in the next couple of years.
This means you may count on a diesel pickup that offers good fuel economy and solid overall capabilities. Just like models with other powertrain options under the hood, it offers a well-designed and practical cabin, loads of standard equipment and excellent predicted reliability ratings. That seems more than enough to consider it a class leader, once again.
Since there are no significant changes to come for the next year, we presume it will hit the market sometime late in the year.
2022 Ford F-150 Diesel Design
Design-wise, the 2022 Ford F-150 Diesel won’t be much different compared to the rest of the lineup. It will continue with all the goodies that came with the recent redesign. Unlike some previous overhauls, this one wasn’t that significant. Changes were rather evolutionary and the Blue Oval company continued to develop its unique, all-aluminum chassis, which brings benefits in terms of weight savings but also keeps the truck rigid and sturdy.
The same evolutionary approach we can see in terms of aesthetics, considering that the recent redesign has brought changes mostly at the front, where we can see a new grille, headlights and similar kinds of updates. The overall body remained largely the same.
On the inside, you can notice a new, large touchscreen, while the dashboard looks finer. The build quality seems better, while more materials are soft to the touch. The overall impression is good, though we can’t say that this model looks as upscale as the RAM 1500. It isn’t as comfortable either, considering that RAM’s model offers a superior suspension setup. On the other side, the overall capability is at an impressive level.
2022 Ford F-150 Diesel Engine
Under the hood, the 2022 Ford F-150 Diesel continues with a familiar 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel. The engine features a max output of around 250 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque and comes in pair with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Compared to rivals, the numbers seem a little bit lower but in reality, it’s hard to notice that this truck is underpowered. Driving dynamics are okay, as well as the overall capabilities.
With this engine, you may count on about 12.100 pounds of max towing capacity, which is slightly lower compared to RAM 1500 Ecodiesel but still way better compared to Silverado equipped with an oil-burner. The max payload capacity goes around 1.840 pounds. When it comes to fuel economy, you may count on about 24 mpg combined, which seems pretty good for the class.
Trim Levels
A great thing to know is that this engine is available in various configurations. Practically, you can get it on every trim level except for the range-topping Limited.
Therefore, the offer starts with the XL model, which is a typical workhorse but comes with a more than a decent list of standard equipment. You may count on tech goodies like an 8-inch touch screen, a Wi-Fi hot spot, USB ports, Bluetooth, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay. Also, the list of safety features includes a rearview camera, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, and forward automatic emergency braking. Some of these features are part of Ford’s Co-Pilot360 suite of technology.
The XLT is a bit of an upgrade. This trim level adds power windows and door locks, lane keep assist, rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, and cross traffic alert.
For those who are looking for a good balance between price and quality, the Lariat has always been the first choice. This model comes standard with goodies like leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, heated and ventilated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, push-button start, remote start, a 12-inch digital gauge cluster, a 12-inch touch screen.
We know King Ranch for unique styling details but it also comes with a plethora of upgrades in terms of standard equipment. Some of the highlights are things like an in-bed power outlet, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, adaptive cruise control, front parking sensors, intersection assist, navigation, an eight-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system, HD Radio, wireless charging etc.
Finally, there is the Platinum trim, which adds goodies like massaging front seats, traffic sign recognition, and power-deployable running boards.
