Last year, the Japanese manufacturer finally presented the new version of the beloved small SUV. The previous generation was in production for almost two decades, so this redesign was more than highly anticipated. While the new model impresses in many ways, it looks like there are some big changes on the way for the 2021 Suzuki Jimny. First of all, it looks like the company is preparing a new body style. The four-door model has been rumored, with a longer wheelbase and more interior space.
On the other side – sad news, as it looks that the famous baby off-roader won’t be offered in Europe anymore. The reason lays in high emissions taxes, considering that Suzuki’s 1.5-liter engine isn’t the greenest on the market. On the other side, the company doesn’t plant to bother with electrification, at least not in the near future.
Despite the changes, the 2021 Suzuki Jimny probably won’t hit the market much earlier than usual.
2021 Suzuki Jimny Redesign
First of all, the next year may bring a couple of interesting novelties for the next year. This particularly refers to a new body style, as several reports suggest we should see a four-door version in the offer. So far, this small SUV has been available only in a two-door version, so this version would bring a lot of interesting improvements, particularly for those who like Jimny’s design but would like a little bit more space on the inside. Therefore, the new body style should feature a longer wheelbase, which in practice means more space on the inside and more cargo volume.
Despite the changes, the overall design will remain the same. Of course, the main characteristic of this model is it’s classic, body-on-frame layout, which is a real rarity these days, especially when it comes to small SUVs. That’s the reason why most small crossover can’t compete with Jimny in terms of off-road performances.
Interior
On the inside, the new version would definitely provide more space. Thanks to a longer wheelbase, the new version would be more spacious on the inside, especially in the second row, which is currently pretty tight in terms of legroom. Also, we count on more cargo space.
Other than more space, the overall cabin layout shouldn’t be much different. Therefore, you may count on the same dashboard design. It offers a pretty attractive, lifestyle aesthetical approach, which completely matches the model’s exterior design.
The aspect where we might see some novelties is the list of standard equipment. The 2021 Suzuki Jimny could come with a couple of novelties, though we don’t expect to see too many of these changes.
2021 Suzuki Jimny Engines
When it comes to the powertrain, we don’t expect changes for the next year. The recent redesign has brought a new gasoline engine, which is bigger and more powerful than before. We are talking about a 1.5-liter four-cylinder unit, which is good for about 100 horsepower and a little bit more pound-feet of torque. In Japan, the Jimny also comes in the Kei car version, which besides smaller dimensions also means a smaller engine. This version is equipped with a small 660cc three-cylinder engine, which gets help from a turbocharger, so the max output goes up to quite respectable 64 horsepower.
Release Date and Price
As we already mentioned, the 2021 Suzuki Jimny isn’t expected to arrive any earlier than usual, so we expect to see it sometime in the last quarter of the year. When it comes to the price, base models should go around 18.000 dollars.
2021 Suzuki Jimny Won’t Be Available In Europe Anymore
The Japanese will drop a small SUV from the European market because it will not comply with the new regulations for 2021. However, thanks to holes in these regulations, it will not completely disappear from the scene. The revised model could return to the roads on the Old Continent.
As we know, carmakers are required to reduce their average carbon dioxide fleet emissions to comply with the 2021 standards. Despite having a small 1.5-liter engine, Jimny releases a fair amount of this gas into the atmosphere. However, these emissions standards aren’t that strict when it comes to commercial vehicles. So, the Jimny will come to Europe without rear seats and with a couple of more modifications, to meet the standards of a commercial vehicle. Eventually, the standard, passenger version may come back as soon as Suzuki gets an engine with less CO2 emission.
