At the moment, the British company offers plug-in versions of Range Rover and Range Rover Sport. But, taking into account that the partner Jaguar working on the all-electric I-Pace, it was logical for the Land Rover to introduce another e-model. The upcoming vehicle will be an all-electric 2020 Land Rover Road Rover.
The upcoming SUV will be able to compete with the next-gen Porsche Macan. Besides, the customers will get and luxury Rover with excellent performances and driving range. Also, the name “Road Rover” is not confirmed yet. The JLR patented the nameplate last July, but there are some rumors that the electric SUV might come under a different name.
Land Rover’s Electrification Strategy
Well, the 2020 Land Rover Road Rover is just the beginning of the electrification process. The JLR plans a whole lineup of the EVs in the next couple of years. Some of the forthcoming vehicles will have the plug-in option, while others will go fully electric. Therefore, expect to see the entire Range Rover brand, Discovery, and Defender to go electric. Still, we assume that the Defender will be only a plug-in hybrid. The first of the electric models from the Land Rover should come before the end of the year.
2020 Land Rover Road Rover Platform
The upcoming 2020 Land Rover Road Rover electric SUV will share the modular architecture with the Jaguar XJ. Since the automaker’s patent filling, back in 2018, the Road Rover project is one of the main topics in the automotive industry. Some experts assume that the announced electric model will be a butch wagon. On the other hand, some of them suggest that it will be built as a full-on luxury sedan. However, the latest reports show that the Road Rover will directly compete against EVs from Porsche and Audi.
According to the company reports, the forthcoming model will be a medium SUV. Therefore, it will go against Macan EV and e-Tron Sportback. As for the dimensions, it could fir right in between the Evoque and Velar. The Road Rover will ride on the Modular Longitudinal Platform. This ‘skateboard’ architecture will include battery capacity up to 90 kWh, and it will provide a range of around 300 miles.
Engine, Driving Range and Price
2020 Land Rover Road Rover and a new generation of Jaguar XJ will use the same two electric motors setup. One motor will be mounted on each axle, providing the four-wheel-drive when needed. Also, this system offers huge velocity, with a 0-60 mph sprint under 5 seconds. As for the range, we mentioned above that the available battery will provide up to 400 miles on the WTLP test. That’s a bit more than what I-Pace offers.
The Road Rover will include a height-adjustable suspension and off-road driving modes. But, the focus is more on the luxury and the passengers’ comfort. Still, the available space will hardly surpass anything else offered in Rover’s lineup at the moment. But, with the price of around $106,000 it sits at the top of the range.
